IPL: We need to work a lot on our batting and bowling, Sanju Samson after RR defeat vs SRH

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson demanded improvement from his team’s players and bowlers after a 7-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 40th match of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday.

Samson’s destructive half-century went in vain as RR failed to defend 165 in Dubai but managed to hold on to the 6th position on the IPL 2021 points table despite the defeat.

Samson was just one of 3 batsmen who fired for RR along with Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) and Mahipal Lomror (29 not out) while their bowlers also failed to restrict the flow of runs during SRH’s run chase.

“I think it was a decent score. The wicket was a bit sticky, they were bowling well. We could have got 10-20 runs more. On a sticky wicket once you get a start you need to keep on going. I wanted to keep going after the powerplay but we kept losing wickets, so I wanted to stick on and have a partnership.

“We wanted to put on a respectable total to fight back. But we got what we had targetted after the timeout. We need to work on bowling and batting. We need to be at our best every ball and execute well. We need to lift our standards,” Samson said after the match.

Sanju Samson played yet another captain’s and top-scored with 82 off 57 balls to help his team reach 164 for 5 but still ended up on the losing side as SRH gunned down the target thanks to Jason Roy’s 42-ball 60 and Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 51.

“Really thankful and grateful for Sunrisers for the opportunity. I’m extremely happy and even more so because we got over the line. He (Saha) was instrumental in that (opening) partnership, allowed me to relax a little bit and really happy with that.

“We obviously had a tough tournament, but to come out and play like that with a smile on the face, we have got to keep our feet grounded and keep doing the right things,” Roy said after picking up the Player of the Match award.
