IPL: Sanju Samson completes 3000 runs, takes Orange Cap from Dhawan

Sanju Samson added another feather to his cap on Monday, completing 3,000 runs in the Indian Premier League and topping the list for most runs in the tournament this season to secure an orange cap from Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Samson smashed 82 off 57 balls with 7 fours and three sixes against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 40 to become the 19th batsman to reach 3000 IPL runs. He scored his 15th fifty and second in succession to go past Dhawan’s tally of 430 runs.

Samson now has 3017 career runs from 117 IPL matches at an average of 29.87. Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli leads the all-time list with 6185 runs followed by Dhawan (5627), Rohit Sharma (5556), Suresh Raina (5523) and David Warner (5449) completing the top-five.

Samson has already amassed 433 runs from 10 games this season at an average of 54.12 with 1 hundred and two fifties. This is the second season in which Samson has gone past 400 runs after IPL 2018 in which he managed 441 from 15 games at 31.50 with 3 half-centuries to finish in 15th place.

The 26-year-old Royal played a captain’s knock against SRH to help his team post 164 for 5 in 20 overs after electing to bat first. Samson top-scored with 82 while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mahipal Lomror contributed with 36 and 29 not out respectively.

Siddharth Kaul picked a couple of wickets in the final over to pull things back for SRH while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma and Rashid Khan bagged one each. This is a must-win game for the Royals as they look to stay in contention for the play-offs.
