England played good cricket at Lord’s, let’s not forget that: Nasser Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that in order for the hosts to be able to return in the next three tests, it is important that other players start performing, as excessive dependence on Joe Root will not help them win against India.

However, Hussain also said that England did play a lot of good cricket at Lord’s before squandering the first-innings lead to losing the second Test by 151 runs and that’s why it was not right to write them off just yet.

Notably, England went into the final day on Monday with complete control on the Lord’s Test but tail-end batting duo Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami helped India turn the match on its head.

Chasing 272 for victory and series lead in the second Test, England were bowled out for a meager 120 in the last two sessions and suffered a 151-run defeat at the hands of India.

Root scored a sublime 180* in the first innings of the second Test match against India at Lord’s and was one of the few bright spots in the hosts’ 151-run defeat. Root was placed at No.5 before the start of the series but two centuries in two matches has brought him within striking distance of Kane Williamson’s top spot.

“England did play a lot of good cricket at Lord’s, let’s not forget that. When Rishabh Pant was walking off on Monday we all thought it could be 1-0 to England. India do have frailties in their batting. But England can’t win Tests with just one player in Root getting runs.”

“Robinson has been an incredible find when there have been so many injuries to bowlers. So let’s not write them off just yet, but they desperately need others to score runs,” he added.

The two sides face each other in the third Test at Headingley on August 25.
