Euro 2020: Ben White replaces injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s 26-man squad

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White has been named in the England squad for the European Championship to replace the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold withdrew from the England squad last week after he suffered a thigh injury during the closing stages of their 1-0 friendly win over Austria on June 2.

White made his England debut against Austria and was also part of the team which defeated Romania 1-0 in Sunday’s final Euro warm-up game.

He was part of coach Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad.

White has been called up after an impressive 2020-21 campaign at Brighton which saw him solidify his reputation as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old featured in 36 top-flight games for the Seagulls last term, helping them avoid the drop and secure a 16th place finish.

White has been rewarded ahead of Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse – both of whom have also shown their quality in the past week.

England boss Southgate also had Ben Godfrey, Aaron Ramsdale and Ollie Watkins to choose from. Mason Greenwood was earlier ruled out of the Euros with a groin issue.

England start their campaign against Croatia in the Group D opener on June 13 before they face Scotland on June 18 and the Czech Republic on June 22, with all the games being played at Wembley.
