Getting picked for India has given me a sense of acceptance: Spinner Varun Chakravarthy

Kolkata Knight Riders ‘ enigmatic spinner Varun Chakravarthy said his confidence in playing with the ball has increased after he was selected for the Indian squad for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, and now that he has become the leading spinner for his team in the Indian Premier League, he feels recognized.

Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball on Monday as he picked 3 wickets for 13 runs from his 4 overs to script KKR’s 9-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 31 of IPL 2021 in Abu Dhabi.

The Karnataka cricketer was adjudged Player of the Match for his spell which broke RCB’s backbone and they eventually got bowled out for 92 – their sixth lowest score in the IPL.

“I try to assess the pitch first. It was flat only. Would like to give credit to the bowlers who bowled in the powerplay for the discipline. There wasn’t much in the pitch.

“Wasn’t much spin on offer so I had to keep it on the stumps. Definitely made me feel better, and got a sense of acceptance from the people around me. Playing for India has made me feel better, I have a sense of acceptance from people around me, because I started at 26.,” Varun Chakravarthy said after the game.

The 30-year-old missed out on a hat-trick during RCB’s innings after getting the wickets of Glenn Maxwell and debutant Wanindu Hasaranga off successive balls in the 12th over.

He trapped Kyle Jamieson with his third delivery. Varun pleaded with Eoin Morgan to take the review but the KKR skipper decided against it and replays confirmed the ball had hit the batsman’s inside-edge.

“I thought it was out (the hattrick ball) but just saw the replay that there was an inside edge,” Varun added.

Kolkata Knight Riders, who need to win 5 out of their remaining 6 T20s, will next face defending champions Mumbai Indians at the same venue on September 23 while RCB will take on Chennai Super Kings a day later in Sharjah.
