Yuzvendra Chahal digs selectors with the ‘faster spinner’ comment

One of the most notable omissions in India’s T20 World Cup squad, runner-up Yuzvendra Chahal cheekily rummaged through the selection committee after he was not selected for next month’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Chahal replied to former India opener Aakash Chopra’s tweet and questioned the requirement of ‘faster spinners.’

Rahul Chahar has been preferred over Chahal, who was a certainty in India’s limited squads until now.

Sharing light on the omission of Chahal, chief selector Chetan Sharma said: “Yuzvendra Chahal’s name was discussed. But we picked Rahul Chahar over Yuzi as we wanted someone who bowls fast and gets pace off the pitch. He also gets the ball to grip through the surface.”

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has also raised questions about the omission of Yuzvendra Chahal from the T20 World Cup.

Chahal was far from his best in the first leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in India. Despite Royal Challengers Bangalore playing in spin-friendly surfaces such as the one in Chennai, the leg-spinner struggled for rhythm and could only pick four wickets in seven matches at an economy of 8.26.

During a training session for his team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Thursday asserted that he will be his wily, old wicket-taking self in the upcoming second half of this year’s IPL.

“I’m very pumped up, especially, you know, we’re good on the points table and we have a very good chance to stay at the top of the table and when you bowl well after a long time you always feel good. Today, I can say that the old Yuzi is back,” he said.
