Marizanne Kapp fires Oval Invincibles to women’s title in inaugural edition at The Hundred

The Oval Invincibles were crowned champions of the first edition of the women’s Hundred competition when they scored a landslide victory over Southern Brave at the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The Invincibles rode on a stunning all-round effort from Marizanne Kapp to register a 48-run win in the big final.

The women’s final of The Hundred, 100-ball tournament in England, preceded the men’s final between Birmingham Phoenix and Southern Brave.

South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp was the Hero of the match as she picked up 4 wickets for just 9 runs in 18 balls after smashing a quickfire 26 that helped the Invincibles push their total to 121 for 8 in 100 balls.

Kapp opened the bowling for Invincibles and the Brave’s chase was dealt a huge blow as they lost their first three wickets in a span of 6 balls. Kapp removed Danielle Wyatt (0), Gaby Lewis (0) and Sophia Dunkley (0) to give the Invincibles a near invincible position after her first spell.

Brave’s stuttering run chase: From 2 for 3 to 29 for 7

Stafanie Taylor battled with 18 and Fi Morris got 23 but it was not enough as the Brave were shot out for 73 in 98 balls. The Brave were reeling at 2 for 3, 14 for 6 and 29 for 7 at various stages of their run chase that never had any momentum.

Kapp finished with figures of 4 for 9 in 18 balls after she had hammered 4 boundaries for her 14-ball 26.

Earlier in the day, Invincibles captain van Niekrik hit a steady 26 (29 balls) after which Fran Wilson hit 25 from 29 balls. It was Kapp and Alica Capssey (18 from 12 balls) who provided the much-needed late impetus to the Invincibles innings.

The Hundred Women’s Competition Final Brief Scores: Oval Invincibles (121/6 in 100 balls (Kapp 26, van Niekerk 26; Shrubsole 2/16) beat Southern Brave 73-all out in 98 balls (Morris 23, Kapp 4/9) by 48 runs.
