Afghanistan footballer Zaki Anwari died after falling from plane at Kabul Airport

Zaki Anwari, a football player of the Afghan national team, was died when he fell from an American plane at the Kabul airport on Monday, the Afghan Ariana news agency reported on Thursday.

Crowds of people seeking to flee Afghanistan have thronged the airport since Taliban insurgents swept to power on Sunday, many seen trying to board a moving plane.

Ariana said Zaki Anwari fell from a USAF Boeing C-17 and that the death had been confirmed by the General Directorate for Sport.

Anwari was one of thousands of Afghans who flocked to the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Monday, the day after the Taliban captured the Afghan capital, hoping to get on a plane out of the country. He reportedly climbed onto a C-17 plane that was about to depart from Kabul.

Zaki Anwari’s remains were said to have been found aboard the US Air Force C-17 transport plane after the aircraft dashed to escape the advancing Taliban while carrying hundreds of refugees.

Hundreds of Afghans were seen crowding the US Air Force jet as it took off from the runway. Some managed to hang on to the wheels of the flight or sat on the wings, only to fall to their deaths from the sky.

New videos from the Kabul airport have emerged showing women crying for help from outside the gates and barbed wires, pleading the troops to let them in. In the video, the women are heard saying, “Help us, the Taliban are coming.”
