Winning at Lord’s as a player and coach is something special: says Ravi Shastri

Ravi Sastry was at the helm of the Indian team when India suffered a crushing defeat in 3 days at Lord’s in 2018. Plenty of questions were asked when India made some inexplicable calls to drop to an innings defeat by 159 runs.

Cut to 2021, Ravi Shastri was a proud coach, watching the final England wicket fall on Monday evening as India scripted a terrific comeback on the final day to win the Lord’s Test and go 1-0 up in the 5-match series. India hammered England by 151 runs after needing only 51.5 overs to bowl them out for 120. With Mohammed Siraj picking up 4 wickets and Jasprit Bumrah picking up 3 wickets, India came out charged up and got the job done in less than 2 sessions.

Earlier in the day, India found unlikely batting heroes in Mohammed Shami and Bumrah as the duo added 89 runs for the 9th wicket to stretch India’s lead.

After overseeing one of India’s finest overseas victories, Ravi Shastri took to social media to appreciate his team and do a bit of flaunting as well.

“To win at @HomeOfCricket as a player and coach is something very special. Thanks a ton guys for making it happen. Enjoy the moment,” Shastri said in a Tweet.

Notably, Shastri was part of the Kapil Dev-led Indian team which became the first from the country to win a Tet match at Lord’s in 1986. Shastri was in the middle with his captain Kapil when India went past the finish line in the said Test match.

Taking to social media, skipper Virat Kohli and opening batsman Rohit Sharma also lauded the team for a remarkable effort at Lord’s.

India had to wait 28 years for their 2nd Test match win at Lord’s as an MS Dhoni-led side defeated England at the iconic venue in 2014. The 3rd win came on Monday as Kohli’s men avenged the 2018 loss with a spirited display of Test cricket in London.
