Lord’s Test: England bowler Stuart Broad experiences calf strain during warm-up

England striker Stuart Broad has suffered an injury doubt for the Lord’s test against India starting on Thursday.

Broad sat out Tuesday’s net session at Lord’s after feeling a discomfort in his right calf during the warm-ups.

The 35-year-old will be assessed by medics before a decision is made over his availability for what would be his 150th Test.

An update from the England and Wales Cricket Board read: “England seamer Stuart Broad has tweaked his right calf in today’s warm-up at Lord’s.

“He was unable to train this afternoon with the rest of the England squad. Broad will have a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of his injury.”

England is already missing Jofra Archer due to an injury, while all-rounder Ben Stokes has taken an indefinite break to focus on mental health.

If Broad will be ruled out, or if England decide not to risk him, Mark Wood might get a look in. Wood may well have come in anyway to freshen up a side that lacked a 90mph option in Nottingham.

The second Test begins at Lord’s on Thursday.

The opening Test ended in a draw after rain washed out the final day.

England on Tuesday recalled spin bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali to the squad ahead of the second Test against India.

Moeen Ali has only played one first-class game in the last 23 months, he has been in fine form in the white-ball game.

He last played a Test in February, also against India in the second Test in Chennai, where he claimed eight wickets in the match, but subsequently returned home as part of England’s rest and rotation policy.
