Australia’s Nathan Ellis makes history by claiming a hat-trick in T20I debut vs Bangladesh

His three scalps include Mahmudullah, Mehedi Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman, whom he has picked up in Bangladesh’s last three innings.

On Friday, Australian pacer Nathan Ellis created a new bowling record as he claimed a hat-trick in his very first T20I. By doing so, he has become the very first person to achieve this feat. Nathan achieved this feat in the third T20I between Australia and Bangladesh during the ongoing T20I series.

His three scalps included Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, and Mustafizur Rahman which he up picked in the last three-ball of Bangladesh’s innings. Nathan first picked up the wicket of Mahmudullah by bowling him with a full ball. The Bangladeshi skipper was playing at a score of 52. He then picked up the wicket of Mustafizur who got caught in the deep midwicket trying to up the score. In the final ball of the innings, Nathan bowled a short ball to Mahedi who in an attempt to pull the ball got caught by Ashton Agar.

This is a huge achievement for the 26-year-old pacer who wasn’t even the first choice in the squad. He came in as a replacement for Riley Meredith who had to miss the T20I series due to a side strain. Nathan has now become only the third Australian to claim a hat-trick in T20I, the first two being fast bowler Brett Lee and spinner Ashton Agar.

Nathan made his T20 debut in 2018 for Hobert Hurricanes against Lahore Qalandars. Nathan’s story is that of struggle and never giving up attitude as he had to at one point work as a labourer in Hobart while continuing his passion for cricket. His big break came in the form of getting selected for Tasmania’s List-A side under the captaincy of Mathew Wade.

Unfortunately, his hat-trick wasn’t enough to change the fortune of Australia’s result as the visitor suffered their third straight T20I loss. With this, Bangladesh has won the series and will now be aiming for a series whitewash in the five T20Is.

Chasing Bangladesh’s score of 127, Australia could manage only 117 falling short of the target by 10 runs.
