Tokyo 2020: Sara Sorribes beats Ashleigh Barty, who took first place in the 1st round

The first racket of the world tennis in Australia, Ashleigh Barty, was eliminated in the first round of the Olympic Games in Tokyo after losing 6-4, 6-3 to Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo on Sunday. It was Barty’s Olympic debut in singles. On Saturday, she won a doubles match with her Australian teammate Storm Sanders.

Barty, who won Wimbledon just 15 days ago, dropped serve twice in each set as 48th-ranked Sorribes Tormo made just five unforced errors to the Australian’s 27 to earn a shock win.

The defeat comes 15 days after Barty won Wimbledon for her second Grand Slam title. Sorribes will next play either France’s Fiona Ferro or Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia after the biggest win of her career.
