Igor Angulo is very likely to don Odisha FC jersey for 2021-22 season

Last season’s Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Boot winner Igor Angulo is ready to join Odisha FC for the 2021-22 season on the island.

With the Indian Super League (ISL) set to begin in November this year, teams are making some rapid strides in terms of their signings and are boosting their chances at the prestigious tournament. Odisha FC who finished with the wooden spoon last season, are inching closer towards bagging the contract with the golden boot winner of last season, Igor Angulo.

David Villa has been appointed the head of global football operations of the Odisha-based franchise and things might get a further boost for them, with the signing of the Spanish player. Angulo plied his trade for FC Goa last season and netted 14 goals during his tenure last season.

“Angulo likes the Odisha FC project and is keen to join,” a source told Times of India on Sunday. “The deal is expected to be completed this week. Terms have been agreed in principle, it’s just a matter of ironing out a few details.”

Igor Angulo was contacted by Odisha FC last month and provided they give him some clarity on a few tax issues, Igor could well don the Odisha jersey and be the club’s highest-paid player this season.

Odisha FC would undoubtedly be largely benefitted from this signing as things went haywire for them last season. Head coach Stuart Baxton was sacked mid-way through the season and he was replaced by an interim coach in the form of Gerald Peyton. They also finished last in the points table. Under a new leadership team, Odisha FC would be looking forward to changing their fortunes, this time around.

Igor Angulo has previously plied his trade for several franchises across the globe including AS Cannes in France, Apollon Smirnys and FC Platanias in Greece and Gorbik Zabrze in Poland.

The new season of the ISL will begin from November 19th and like last season, it will take place in a bio-bubble in Goa. The same three venues in the form of Fatorda Stadium, GMC Athletic Stadium and Tilak Maidan Stadium will be used for the games.
