Roger Federer congratulates Novak Djokovic on his Wimbledon triumph: Congrats on your 20th major!

Tennis legend Roger Federer welcomed Novak Djokovic on Sunday after the Serbian ace beat Matteo Berrettini in the 2021 Wimbledon men’s singles final to win his 20th Grand Slam title at the All England Club in London.

An erratic Djokovic dropped the first set for only the second time in the tournament this year, before finding his touch and bouncing back to win the match 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and 23 minutes on a packed Centre Court. This his 21st Grand Slam match win in a row in 2021 and 6th Wimbledon title overall.

The win saw the world No. 1 equal Federer and Rafael Nadal’s tally of 20 major wins in the Open Era.

Djokovic also completed the Wimbledon hat-trick (2018, 2019 & 2021) to become the first male player since Federer to achieve the feat. Federer, who exited this year’s Wimbledon in the quarterfinals, had completed his hat-trick back in 2007.

“Congrats Novak on your 20th major. I’m proud to have the opportunity to play in a special era of tennis champions. Wonderful performance, well done!” Federer, who lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the last-8, tweeted after the title clash.

Djokovic also paid “great tribute” to Federer and Nadal in his victory speech when asked what the milestone meant to him.

“I have to pay great tribute to Rafa and Roger. They are legends of our sport and they are the two most important players that I ever faced in my career. They are the reason that I’m where I am today.

“They’ve helped me realise what I need to do in order to improve and get stronger mentally, physically, tactically,” Djokovic said.
