Netherlands storm into round of 16 after Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries score in Austria at Euro 2020

The Netherlands storm into the round of 16 after Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries scored in the Netherlands on Friday, becoming the third team to enter the round of 16 after Italy and Belgium with their comfortable 2-0 win over Austria in their Group C at Euro 2020 in Amsterdam. Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries scored a goal each to help the Dutch reach the Euro knockouts for the first time since 2008. They will also finish on top of the Group C points table with a game in hand.

The Netherlands had failed to qualify in the last two major international football tournaments but have won both their Euro 2020 matches in Group C.

Depay kicked a penalty low into the corner in the 11th minute for his 27th goal in 66 international matches.

Dumfries then scored his second goal of the tournament in the 67th after an unselfish pass from PSV Eindhoven teammate Donyell Malen. The Netherlands have now won their last 22 matches when scoring first. They have scored 68 times and conceded only seven during those games.

Netherlands’ win also saw North Macedonia become the first team to be eliminated from the European Championship. The North Macedonians have lost two matches in Group C and will finish in fourth place in the group no matter the result of their final match against the Netherlands.

Austria will now need to beat Ukraine to finish second in Group C. A draw would likely be enough to see them into the knockout stages in third place.
