IPL: Piyush Chawla becomes india’s highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket

Leg spinner Piyush Chawla on Friday became India’s highest-paid T20 cricketer during the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) 55 match between Mumbai Indians and Hyderabad Sunrisers in Abu Dhabi.

Piyush Chawla, making his debut for Mumbai Indians (MI), picked up the wicket of Mohammad Nabi in the 9th over of SunRisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) run chase to overtake Amit Mishra and set a new record for India with 263 scalps.

Fellow leg-spinner Mishra was the previous record holder with 262 wickets from 236 matches, Chawla now has one more than Mishra from 249 games. Both bowlers are also the top-five wicket-takers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

Mishra is second on the overall list with 166 wickets, while Chawla is fourth with 157 scalps.

Former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi, meanwhile, also set a new record in the match as he took 5 catches in the first innings to set a new IPL record.

MI CRUSH SRH
Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav’s heroics with the bat handed MI their highest T20 total and a 42-run win over SRH, but it was not enough to help the defending champions seal a playoff berth in IPL 2021 on Friday.

Batting first, Mumbai posted 235/9 in 20 overs – their highest T20 total ever-but failed to restrict SRH below 65, thereby making it impossible for MI to match up the playoff criteria at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Eventually, Manish Pandey’s special effort went in vain as MI won the match by 42 runs, but it was Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders that moved ahead in the league. Notably, Mumbai had to beat SRH by 171 runs or more to leapfrog Kolkata Knight Riders on the points table and qualify for the play-offs.

However, they were not able to restrict the run flow on a superb batting pitch at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. SRH opener Jason Roy and Abhishek Sharma went hammer and tongs in the powerplay, stitching a 64-run opening stand in just 5.2 overs.
