Dominic Thiem reports that he does not need surgery on his injured wrist

World number eight Dominic Thiem has announced that he will not need surgery for a wrist injury that caused him to miss the rest of the season.

The Austrian sustained the injury in June at the Mallorca Open, forcing him to miss Wimbledon and denying him the chance to defend his US Open title. He will also be unable to defend his ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells, which he won in 2019.

“I was in Belgium to decide if I need surgery on my wrist or not and luckily I have very, very good news. I won’t need the surgery,” the 28-year-old said in a video on Twitter.

“It’s really stable and it’s looking good, my wrist. The next week I have to make it more flexible and strengthen my wrist, do everything to prepare to slowly start playing tennis again.”

“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s been a pretty long time without a racquet and I honestly miss it.”

Thiem’s best result this season was reaching the Madrid Open semi-finals.

Thiem won his first major title last year at Flushing Meadows, beating Alexander Zverev by becoming the first player to come from two sets down in the US Open final since Pancho Gonzales in 1949.
