IPL: Dropped from team, David Warner watches SRH collapse vs KKR from Dubai stands

In an unfortunate turn of events, David Warner did not lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad attack in Dubai on Sunday in IPL 2021, but the former captain sat in the stands of Dubai International Stadium during the 12th SRH IPL 2021 game on Sunday.

David Warner took to social media to share a selfie from the stands in Dubai along with his teammate Virat Singh and members of the franchise on Sunday as Sunrisers were playing for pride against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 49 of the season.

Notably, Warner did not travel to the stadium for SRH’s last two matches and remain in the hotel rooms in the UAE. On Sunday, he made his first appearance in SRH colors since getting dropped after their match against Punjab Kings on September 25.

Notably, David Warner was sporting a Sunrisers Hyderabad jersey on Sunday. The Australian opener, who led SRH to title in 2016, was removed as captain earlier this year. He has played only 2 matches in the UAE leg of the season, managing scores of 0 and 2.

With Warner watching from the stands, Sunrisers came up with another inept batting performance on Sunday. They were restricted to 115 for 8 in 20 overs.

Kane Williamson top-scored with 26 and Abdul Samad hit a quickfire 25 but 6 of their 11 batters got single-digit scores as Kolkata choked the run flow, not allowing momentum to the strugglers at any point in the innings.

SRH are reeling at the bottom of the points table with just 2 wins in 11 matches in IPL 2021. They were the first team to be eliminated from the play-offs race.

Earlier in the week, former England captain Kevin Pietersen said it’s disappointing to see how SRH have handled the Warner situation.

“David Warner just is Sunrisers Hyderabad, so it’s disheartening to see his love affair with the franchise unravelling like this.

“He has scored so many runs for them over the years, captained them to the title, and has been at the heart and soul of everything that they do,” KP wrote in his blog of Betway Insider.

Warner is the fifth highest scorer in the IPL with 5449 runs from 150 games with 4 hundreds and 50 half-centuries. He has amassed more than 500 runs 7 seasons in a row from 2014 to 2020 but has been struggling this year having scored just 195 runs from 8 games at 24.3.
