Ex-Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri announced his retirement

Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri on Sunday announced his retirement from football at the age of 34.

Nasri, 34, served an 18-month doping suspension from 2018, an episode that he said changed his way of seeing football.

“It was just an injection of vitamins because I was sick,” the former Olympique de Marseille, Arsenal and Manchester City player, whose career effectively ended last year after a short stint at Anderlecht, told Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

Nasri made his name with Marseille before moving to Arsenal for a fee of £12million in 2008 where he worked under Arsene Wenger for three years.

The French international joined Manchester City in 2011 for £25m and helped the team win two Premier League titles and the FA Cup over six years with the club.

Nasri won two Premier League titles, in 2011-12 under Roberto Mancini and 2013-14 under Manuel Pellegrini, at the Etihad Stadium – playing 46 times in all competitions in both seasons.

He has played for Turkish side Antalyaspor, West Ham and Anderlecht over the past four years and scored five goals for France while picking up 41 caps between 2007 and 2013.
